In 2026, the Lufthansa Group is reflecting on a significant milestone: the founding of the original “Luft Hansa” on January 6, 1926. The company was established through a merger between Junkers Luftverkehr and Deutsche Aero Lloyd, with its inaugural flights taking place on April 6 of that same year. The anniversary year is being used to highlight both the technological evolution of aviation and the company’s broader social and historical role.
Under the theme “We are the Journey,” the company is acknowledging the 100,000 employees currently working within the Group. Several educational and informative projects are being launched, including a permanent exhibition at the Lufthansa Group Hangar One and the publication of a historical reference book. At various airports and city locations, visual displays will illustrate the development of aviation over the past century.
Regarding the fleet, a limited number of aircraft have been outfitted with special liveries. This includes six aircraft, among them the new Boeing 787-9 and models such as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 747-8. Two of these aircraft will feature historical “retro” designs to symbolize the different eras of the company. The well-known crane logo, which dates back to 1918, remains the central identifying symbol.
