Tourists traveling to Zanzibar will have to pay a mandatory insurance fee of 44 US dollars from October 1, 2024.
This fee covers the duration of their stay on the island for up to 92 days.
The insurance covers various aspects that are often problematic for visitors, such as health care, loss of luggage, accidents, emergency evacuations, loss of passports, and even the repatriation of remains in case of death,” said Finance Minister Saada Mkuya Salum.
The coverage is provided by the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation, a state-owned company.
This insurance is mandatory, regardless of whether the traveler has already taken out another travel insurance from the home country.
Failure to comply may result in refusal of entry at immigration control.
Until now, travel insurance was not mandatory in Tanzania and other East African countries.
With this new measure, Zanzibar hopes to better protect tourists and offer them a safer stay, reports the German dpa. (Photo Shutterstock).
