The Swedish government has announced that the tax on airline tickets will be abolished from the summer of 2025.
This decision was announced by the government, with the support of the Sweden Democrats, a radical right-wing political party.
This measure reverses an earlier tax, which was introduced in 2018 by a centre-left coalition.
The abolition of the airline ticket tax is intended to support domestic businesses.
Linda Lindberg, Member of Parliament for the Sweden Democrats, stated at a press conference: “This will ensure lower fares for travelers and increased demand for flights, which in turn strengthens the competitive position of airlines.”
Earlier this year, the government had already announced the plan to halve the tax on airline tickets as of January 1, 2025.
News of the complete abolition sent Norwegian Air Shuttle’s shares soaring 6.4% in Oslo, the biggest rise since July this year.
With this move, Sweden hopes to boost the aviation industry at a time of rising costs and increasing international competition.
