It is unjustified that KLM has received 3.4 billion euros in corona support from the Dutch government. The European Commission approved the loan in 2020, but according to the European Court of Justice, that should not have happened. This is stated in a judgment of the European Court of Justice that was published on Wednesday. The Dutch aid should only have ended up with KLM, but according to the court, Air France, as part of the Air France-KLM airline combination, could at least have benefited from the loan. The case was brought by Ryanair. The low-cost carrier found that there was unfair competition when airlines that are partly state-owned received support from governments. Ryanair did not receive this support and sued several European airlines. The European Commission will first study the matter and consider the next steps. KLM will also first study the judgment and assess its implications, the FD reports. Incidentally, KLM has already repaid the Dutch state aid in full in the summer of 2022. (Photo KLM).
