Climate activists disrupted air traffic at Frankfurt am Main airport on Thursday morning.
As a result, flights at Germany’s busiest airport had to be halted briefly.
In the course of the morning, the flight schedule was gradually resumed.
Protesters from action group Letzte Generation cut open a fence and placed banners in various places around the runways with the text ‘Oil kills’.
“The continued exploitation and burning of oil, gas and coal is a threat to our survival,” the activists declared.
According to an airport spokesperson, seven people were able to break through security in the early morning and stick to the start and end of two central runways.
However, all four runways were back in use before 8:00 a.m.
Two activists have since been released and handed over to the police for further investigation.
As a result of climate action, around 140 flights have been cancelled at Frankfurt Airport.
Airport operator Fraport has warned of further delays during the course of the day.
Passengers are advised to check their flight status on the airlines’ websites before traveling to the airport.
A total of 1,400 take-offs and landings were planned for Thursday.
Cologne Bonn Airport had to suspend flights for several hours on Wednesday after climate activists glued themselves to a runway.
That demonstration was also organized by Letzte Generation.
Similar actions also took place on Wednesday at airports in other European countries, including London and Oslo. (Photo Shutterstock).
