The bus station at Schiphol will be completely renovated in the coming years. The current stops will make way for a new large bus platform with a roof and three new stairs from the bus station to the train platform. This was announced by the national airport on Monday. There will also be a new bicycle shed with space for 500 bicycles. The renovation will improve the accessibility of Schiphol by public transport. From 2027, travellers will use the new hub, S hiphol promises. The new bus station will be one large platform island with a roof and 20 stops, making room for more buses. There is also more space for travelers to wait for the bus. After the renovation, it will be easier to transfer between train and bus. Three new staircases will connect the bus station directly to the underlying train platforms, so that passengers can transfer directly between the train and bus. Gates will be placed around these stairs for checking in and out. There will also be a new bicycle shed with space for approximately 500 bicycles, where passengers and employees can park their bicycles. The surrounding roads will be redesigned and connected to the new bus station. The first work at the bus station, which consists of the construction of the temporary bicycle parking, cables and pipes, will start in May 2024. From October 2024, work on the bus station will be carried out in phases. Passengers can continue to use the bus station during the works. Many of the bus station stops will be temporarily relocated. The signage and stop information for bus passengers will be adapted to this temporary situation. The existing stops and lane for the Schiphol taxi and P3 buses will remain in the same place. ‘At the moment, about half of all passengers come by public transport and we aim to increase that in order to make transport to and from Schiphol more sustainable,’ says Sybren Hahn, Executive Director Schiphol Infrastructure. ‘This requires investments in the bus station, so that travellers will be able to switch to the various transport options even more easily in the future: plane, train, bus, bicycle, taxi, shared transport or car. Schiphol really is a hub where different forms of mobility come together.’ (Image: Schiphol).
