With the European Union’s approval of the takeover, a major hurdle has been overcome. All that remains is a decision by the US authorities. Korean Air aims to complete the deal by the end of 2024. With the acquisition, Korean Air will become South Korea’s largest airline and the seventh largest airline in the world. The approval is subject to certain obligations, including the sale of Asiana Airlines’ cargo business and the support of new entrants on certain routes between the EU and South Korea. To meet the first condition, Korean Air would have to engage a consulting firm, launch a tender procedure and select the buyer for the sale of Asiana Cargo. Meanwhile, the European Commission stated that the sale includes the aircraft, slots, traffic rights, flight crew, and other employees of the industry, as well as customer contracts. In order to protect the market for flights between the EU and South Korea, Korean Air has ordered Tway Air to operate routes on which the European Commission has raised concerns. This includes flights between Seoul Incheon International Airport and Paris Charles De Gaulle International Airport, Rome-Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino, Barcelona El Prat Airport, and Frankfurt.
