The blockade of Frankfurt airport last Thursday could be a costly affair for the climate activists of Letzte Generation. Lufthansa is demanding compensation from the activists for the cancelled flights. It may be more than a million euros. We will recover the damage suffered by the climate activists in this case as well, a Lufthansa spokesperson told German media on Sunday. According to Bild am Sonntag, it is more than a million euros. However, Lufthansa does not provide any details. The extent of the damage is currently still being calculated. On Thursday, about 270 flights were canceled, many of them from Lufthansa, which has a hub in Frankfurt. Lufthansa has previously demanded money from the Letzte Generation after blockade actions in Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Berlin, the spokesperson said. “It is already clear that the damage amounts will be significantly higher, because in Frankfurt many more flights and passengers were affected, and more planes had to be diverted to other airports.” According to reports, Lufthansa demanded compensation of 740,000 euros in the aforementioned three cases. Seven activists from the Letzte Generation gained access to the Frankfurt Airport grounds early on Thursday by forcing fences. They stuck to the supply roads to the runways. As a result, operations at Germany’s largest airport came to a standstill for more than two hours. The flight operation was disrupted for the rest of the day. The sticking actions of the climate activists are highly controversial. On Thursday, in the middle of the summer holidays, thousands of people had to wait longer for their flights or completely change their travel plans. The Justice Department is investigating whether the activists were guilty of coercion and trespassing. There was no danger to air traffic. (Photo Shutterstock).
