Heavy rains paralyzed Mallorca’s airport on Tuesday afternoon. Several planes on their way to the island were diverted to Barcelona. There were also floods at Playa de Palma, south of the airport. Due to the heavy rainfall, Mallorca airport came to a standstill on Tuesday afternoon. A spokesperson for the airport stated around 3:30 p.m. that all takeoffs and landings had been suspended until further notice. The delays could last for several hours. Many planes that were on their way to Mallorca from Germany or Great Britain were diverted to Barcelona. The rainfall has hit the airport hard. Although there was little or no rain during the day in many parts of the island, 53 liters of water per square meter were recorded at the measuring station at the airport around 15:00. Video footage shows that several parts of the terminal were flooded. The airport is said to have activated the emergency protocol. According to government information, up to 100 liters of rain per square meter fell in some parts of the airport. As can be seen in videos circulating on social networks, the streets of Playa de Palma, close to the airport, were also flooded.
