The KLM Group suffered an operating loss of 31 million euros in the first half of 2024. Revenues were higher than in the same period last year, but due to high costs, the result lagged behind, KLM said in a statement on Thursday. Without measures, there will be no improvement. KLM will therefore take a critical look at investments, cost savings and the possibilities to generate more revenue. After the summer, KLM will introduce new measures. “The result is below expectations due to significantly increased costs,” says CEO Marjan Rintel in a statement. ‘The operation was more stable, but the capacity could not yet be fully utilised. For the time being, the fleet will continue to be less deployable. We have a shortage of pilots and technicians and are struggling with long delivery times of spare parts. The coming period will be dominated by cost control and improving financial results. We will soon be announcing additional company-wide measures. This is a difficult message, but it is essential for the future of KLM.’ According to CFO Bas Brouns, KLM is flying more than last year, but costs are rising faster than revenues. ‘That’s downright disappointing. The margin needs to be better. We are already working on initiatives to work more efficiently, generate more revenue and cut costs. We are going to accelerate and expand this. This means, among other things, that the plan for KLM’s new head office will be postponed. In addition, we are taking a critical look at other investments. We will also continue to reduce the growth in indirect staff.’ The operating loss of 31 million euros is in stark contrast to the results of the same period last year. In the first six months of 2023, KLM recorded a plus of 129 million. Sales amounted to 6 billion euros. In the first six months of 2023, sales were 5,6 billion. KLM welcomed nearly 16 million passengers on board in the first half of the year. In the second quarter, the operation was more stable, so customers were less affected by disruptions thanks to a package of operational measures. These include the available reserve fleet and hiring enough colleagues at various locations in the company, says KLM. Subsidiary Transavia also recorded higher turnover in the first half of the year. ‘Transavia managed to get Dutch people to go on holiday affordably under difficult circumstances, which resulted in a positive result in the second quarter.’ In total, almost 4.5 million people travelled with Transavia in the first half of 2024. Brussels Airport is increasingly presenting itself as an alternative to the busy Schiphol.
If it were up to director Arnaud Feist, his airport would only receive more Dutch people in the future, he says in NRC.
When asked if he sees more interest from the Netherlands, he says: ‘Absolutely. If you go into the parking lot now, you will see a lot of yellow number plates. I think we are attractive to Dutch people, especially from the south of the country. The Dutch airline Transavia stationed a third aircraft here in June.’ ‘About a million Dutch people a year fly from Brussels. Pre-covid, it was 600,000. This is partly thanks to Transavia, Corendon and TUI. Our ambition is to attract even more Dutch people.’
Photo: Arnaud Feist, CEO Brussels Airport (Photo Brussels Airport). Asked if he sees any similarities between Brussels Airport and Amsterdam, Feist says: ‘Unlike Schiphol, we can still grow.
However, we are not in favour of a cap on the number of flight movements. We want to limit our impact on the environment as much as possible. Then it must be a cap on gelúíd. That is relevant for local residents, not the number of flights.’ He adds: ‘And remember, aviation also has its advantages. The people who are going on holiday here today are all happy. It’s always the same negative discussion now. That never ceases to amaze me,” he told the newspaper.(Photo Brussels Airport).

Ryanair has seen its profit fall sharply in the first quarter as a result of lower ticket prices. The Irish low-cost carrier had initially expected prices to remain stable or rise slightly this year, but the reality turns out to be different. In the first quarter of the current financial year, ticket prices fell by an average of 15 percent. In contrast to last year, the busy Easter days partly fell in March. In addition, the airline had to give its customers higher discounts than planned. For the three months to the end of June, Ryanair achieved a net result of 360 million euros. A year earlier, net profit amounted to nearly 663 million euros. That is almost half (-46 percent). Ryanair is cautious about its outlook for the second quarter. Pricing is tricky, and ticket prices are expected to be significantly lower than they were a year ago. From April to June, Ryanair carried 55.5 million passengers, an increase of ten percent compared to a year earlier. The company aims to increase the number of passengers by eight percent to 200 million passengers in the current financial year. The load factor of the aircraft in the three months to the end of June fell slightly from 95 to 94 percent. Turnover fell by one percent to 3.6 billion euros. The result for the first half of the year now depends on the bookings and revenue in August and September. The management, led by Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary, did not want to give an exact profit forecast. (Photo Shutterstock).

Online travel agency Travix will once again sell TUI fly flights on its platforms, including CheapTickets, Vliegwinkel and BudgetAir.
This revamped partnership will offer travelers an even wider range of flight options, the company says.
“We are pleased to renew our long-standing relationship with TUI fly,” says Casper Maasdam, COO of Travix.
“Integrating TUI fly’s offerings on our websites will enable us to better assist customers in finding and booking affordable travel options. Thanks to TUI fly’s extensive network of holiday destinations worldwide, we can offer our customers even more choice. This strengthens our market position in the Benelux.’
The range of TUI fly flights from the Netherlands and Belgium includes established routes to holiday destinations in the Mediterranean as well as to West Africa and the Caribbean.
The new Brussels-Curaçao route is also included, expanding Travix’s number of destinations in the Benelux.
Travix, which was previously part of BCD Group, the family business of John Fentener van Vlissingen, was acquired by Chinese Trip.com in early 2020.
The Chinese company was already active worldwide with travel brands such as Skyscanner, Ctrip and Qunar. (Photo Shutterstock).

Schiphol Airport has announced in a recent update that the new, 55,000 m² A-Pier will open in April 2027. The construction plans for the pier were announced more than a decade ago, but due to a series of delays such as a switch in contractor (the project is now led by the Dutch company BAM), completion is taking longer. ‘We are pleased that we can now look forward to a new delivery date with confidence. It is clear that Pier A headache project has been far from flawless under the previous contractor. Delays, quality problems and a legal conflict all contributed to progress,’ says Sybren Hahn (Executive Director Schiphol Infrastructure). The current estimated total cost of Pier A has now risen to almost 1.4 billion, almost a billion higher than the originally released budget. The new pier will offer three floors and eight gates for narrowbody and wide-body aircraft, as well as security filters, border control facilities, and retail and F&B amenities. For Schiphol, Pier A is an ‘important pillar in quality and comfort’, and is desperately needed to be able to meet the current and future peak moments. The new pier must also be the most sustainable in the airport. ‘We are currently in talks with the airlines about the new fares and investments for the coming years, including Pier A. Understandably, there are questions about this among the airlines, and we will therefore provide more insight into the project in those discussions and also explain how Schiphol intends to deal with its costs. However, it is good to emphasise that the influence of individual projects on the tariffs is very limited’, explains Robert Carsouw (CFO) in Schiphol’s update.

The German airline Lufthansa, the parent company of Brussels Airlines, received the green light from the European Commission on Wednesday to take a stake in ITA Airways. The agreement includes a capital injection of 325 million euros in exchange for a minority stake of 41 percent. This deal had been in the works for more than a year. However, the European competition authority feared that competition on certain European routes would be curtailed too far, but after a number of commitments, the deal will now go ahead. Founded in November 2020 after its predecessor Alitalia threw in the towel in 2017, ITA Airways has until now been owned by the Italian government. The airline has almost 5000 employees and is based at Rome-Fiumicino Airport. According to Lufthansa, the hub in Rome provides ideal conditions for the expansion of the joint route network to Africa and Latin America, which will improve connections to the southern hemisphere. Caster Spohr, the CEO of the German airline group, suggested in an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera on Thursday, a day after the deal was approved, that Lufthansa plans to increase its stake in ITA to 90 percent. At the time, Brussels Airlines was similarly taken over by the Lufthansa Group, which also has subsidiaries Eurowings, Austrian Airlines and Swiss under its wings.

Corendon introduces a new travel class on board the Airbus A350 on the Amsterdam – Curaçao scheduled service. According to the airline, with Corendon Comfort Plus, travelers can now enjoy more luxury, comfort and tranquility. The new class is positioned in rows 2 through 5 in the popular Only Adult Zone, and is bookable with a travel date starting July 16. Passengers can make use of extras at the airport; for example, there is a separate check-in desk for Comfort Plus, priority boarding applies and you get personal attention from the cabin crew and extra drinks (plus welcome drink). The middle seats in the 3-3-3 arrangement of the A350 are kept empty as standard, with which Corendon tries to offer Comfort Plus passengers as much privacy and space as possible. Ask for more comfort Corendon CEO Gunay Uslu: ‘We noticed that some of our passengers wanted even more comfort on board the flights between Curaçao and Amsterdam. A carefree and luxurious start to their holiday, or an undisturbed pleasant flight if you have to go to Amsterdam for business. In this way, we are meeting that demand in a way that suits Corendon and our passengers perfectly.’ The cost for Comfort Plus is 150 euros each way. People who go to Bonaire with Corendon on November 3 can also book Corendon Comfort Plus .

Just a 3-hour flight from Amsterdam and Brussels is Iceland’s Keflavik International Airport. You immediately imagine yourself in another world. After arriving, just relax right away in one of the lagoons, such as the Blue Lagoon or the newest Skylagoon. Afterwards, enjoy the gourmet food in Reykjavik and explore this cozy capital with numerous bars. Very topical now, of course, is the volcanic activity in Iceland. In a fun and interesting way, learn more about lava and also see it flowing live at the Lava Show in Reykjavik or Vik. Another tip is the FlyOver Iceland, a 5D experience where you can experience the beautiful nature of Iceland up close. Very worthwhile, especially during a Stopover. From Reykjavik there are many day trips to take, into nature, such as the famous Golden Circle. This day trip will take you past Thingvellir National Park, the Strokkur geyser and the Gullfoss waterfall. Or go admire the beautiful waterfalls on a drive along the south coast, ending on the black beach at Vik. A Stopover in Iceland can be made at no additional cost to the ticket price. It is a fun, adventurous and dynamic experience for the client to combine 2 destinations in one trip, who doesn’t have Iceland on their bucket list? Icelandair’s newest ‘colleague’ is Hugi, the world’s first ‘tourist bouncer’, who explains in his own words what a Stopover is all about in this video: Did you know that as a travel agent you can even book a Stopover of up to 21 days with our tour operator rates while a Stopover with an online booking on the Icelandair website can be up to 3-7 days?
For example, you can also sell a whole round of Iceland with an additional few days in New York. Would you like to experience a Stopover Iceland yourself? Join our Icelandair e-learning via TravEcademy and have a chance to win a cool study trip spot in 2024 in collaboration with Brand USA. This November month you must complete the following 5 courses in the Brand USA Discovery Program; Oklahoma, 2 badges Southwest and 2 Experiences. Expansion in the USA and Canada Icelandair’s route network to North America has been expanded with two new destinations. Starting May 16, 2024, it will fly seasonally four times a week to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Known as the “City of Bridges,” Pittsburgh has no fewer than 446 bridges over the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers, among others. Pittsburgh has a rich cultural history; some well-known museums include the Andy Warhol Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and the Carnegie Science Center. Icelandair is also adding a third Canadian destination. In addition to existing year-round destinations Toronto and Vancouver, there will be seasonal flights 3 times a week to Halifax, the capital of the province of Nova Scotia, starting May 31. Halifax is the ideal starting and ending point for a tour of Atlantic Canada, the city itself also has a lot to offer. There are several museums and art galleries, such as the Canadian Museum of Immigration and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. There are several National Historic Sites of which Citadel Hill with Fort George is the most famous. Well-known tourist attractions include the Halifax Town Clock and the Halifax Harbourwalk.

One of the most frequently asked questions Icelandair gets is: when is the best time to travel to Iceland? Our answer, of course, is: all year round! The choice depends very much on what the client wants to explore and experience. Iceland welcomes tourists year-round and offers a range of unique experiences throughout each season, from the enchanting winter nights to the vibrant summer festivals and natural wonders in between. Each season has its own unique appeal.

Winter (December to February) can have challenging weather, but is perfect for northern lights, ice cave visits, skiing and Þorrablót festivities.
Spring (March through May) sees nature transition from white to green, with a return of puffins and whales starting in April and May. It is also a time of increasing daylight.
Summer (June to August) is the most popular season, with endless daylight, festivals, puffins and access to the Icelandic Highlands. This period is ideal for outdoor adventures such as hiking and horseback riding.
Autumn (September to November) is when the northern lights reappear and colorful landscapes show themselves. The annual sheep round (Réttir) and music festivals such as Iceland Airwaves make this a lively time to visit.

For a road trip, the Icelandic Ring Road is an iconic route that can be traveled all year round. By the way, summer months and in-between seasons (April to October) are recommended due to milder weather. Shorter drives along the south coast or in northern Iceland offer beautiful scenery. Mountain roads (F roads) require four-wheel drive and close in September or October. Various resources, such as visiticeland.com, safetravel.is, vedur.is and road.is, provide essential information for planning and preparing for the Iceland trip. Icelandair Icelandair flies to Iceland from Amsterdam and Brussels all year round. Want to know more about Icelandair? Complete the e-learning on TravEcademy and have a chance to win a cool study trip to North America, including an Iceland stopover.
