In Zanzibar, a little less than two years ago, TUI presented itself as a great opportunity to take over an existing hotel and to develop the first hotel of its new brand ‘The Mora’, making its debut in the high-end segment. The official opening of The Mora Zanzibar was attended by Sebastian Ebel, CEO of TUI Group; Peter Krueger, CEO of Vacation Experiences and Head of Strategy, Mergers and Acquisitions; Artur Gerber, managing director of TUI Blue & The Mora; and Reda Sweed, hotel manager. The president of Zanzibar came to give his blessing the morning after the official opening. The five-star hotel is located on the beach of Muyuni (East Zanzibar) and has 250 suites and four restaurants. This is TUI’s fourth hotel at the destination, where it already had three other establishments: two Riu Hotels & Resorts and a TUI Blue, but TUI says new ones are already planned, including a second Riu Palace, the five-star category of the immensely popular RIU chain, which is also immensely popular in the Netherlands. But The Mora is different. The new brand is derived from the Latin word meaning “pause” and the hotel experience is designed to appeal to a new type of tourist looking for contemporary, relaxed luxury with a flexible and highly personalized approach. “Our new hotel brand, The Mora, embraces a current trend: experiences are becoming more important than possessions,” says Ebel. For its part, Krueger states that its goal is to expand TUI Hotels & Resorts’ portfolio to 600 hotels worldwide in the medium term. “For the past 18 months, we have been adding an average of ten new hotels per quarter to our portfolio that will be implemented in the coming years and they are on the right track,” he said. photo: Sebastian Ebel (second from left) and co.

TravJobs, an initiative of TravMagazine and Travelpro, is a special edition (print and digital) about working in the travel industry. The third edition will be published soon. In this magazine you can answer that one question: why should someone work at your organization? Take advantage of this unique opportunity and tell 8,000 travel professionals and 1,200 students (school leavers and trainees) about it. In the magazine, we take a detailed look at the trends and developments in the labor market in the travel industry, but topics such as AI, diversity and tourism education are also discussed extensively. Due to the success of the TravJobs platform and the magazines of the same name, we have been busy developing a ‘state of the art’ job platform in recent months: Travjobs.nl (live soon). We bring employers and job seekers together to help people find a new challenge in an easy, fast and financially interesting way. Do you have a vacancy at the moment? Then this is your chance. Indicate in a specific way what your organization has to offer. Tell about the organization, vision and goals, core values, colleagues, career opportunities, specific USPs, et cetera. With a QR code, the reader then has easy access to your current vacancies. Curious about the possibilities? Get in touch with us.

German tour operator FTI, burdened with a significant debt of almost 1 billion euros, is unable to meet its payment obligations. FTI is Germany’s third-largest tour operator, bringing 15% of tourists to the Canary Islands. Of the 2.5 million Germans who visited the islands in 2023, FTI accounted for nearly half a million. This generated a turnover of 800 million euros on the islands in 2023. Text continues below the podcast. https://open.spotify.com/episode/5kOas2Dnctm4EyAE5pskDt?si=b03130dc8d504e1f In addition, the tour operator manages 30 hotels on the islands, some owned and others operated, under the Labranda brand. Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura have been the most affected by the bankruptcy, with fourteen establishments in Fuerteventura and eleven in Gran Canaria, including the Marieta and Playa Bonita hotels. FTI operates three hotels in Tenerife and four in Lanzarote. The Minister of Tourism and Employment of the Canary Islands, Jéssica de León, on Monday expressed concern about the local tourism sector following the bankruptcy of the German tour operator FTI. “We have scheduled coordination meetings with tourism associations, sector associations and island councils to draw up a roadmap to mitigate the potential impact of FTI’s insolvency,” she stressed. De León also mentioned that she will discuss this issue with the Secretary of State for Tourism, Rosario Sánchez, and wants to schedule a meeting to address the impact of FTI’s bankruptcy on the islands. “We are studying the situation thoroughly to correctly estimate the true extent of the job loss and the number of tourists affected,” De León added. “FTI was a vertically integrated group that covered almost the entire value chain. Although they didn’t have their own airline, they hired charter services or reserved seats with regular airlines,” she concluded. Photo: T. Schneider / Shutterstock.com

On Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024, it is once again time for “the Oscars of the travel industry. During the prestigious Travel Gala at the Hart van Holland in Nijkerk, the Holiday Awards are again traditionally presented. The Holiday Awards are the well-known and respected B2B industry awards for peers, chosen by peers. This means that everyone working in the Dutch travel industry is asked to cast their vote. The idea behind it is simple: people who deal with travel and vacations on a professional basis every day know better than anyone else which companies in the tourism industry perform best and deserve an award for it. Voting is open until 2 January 2024.
Vote here now!
With eight new categories this year, a total of 36 awards will be presented during the Travel Gala.

The Top 50 is 25 years old and we are celebrating with the fattest edition ever. This anniversary edition contains a lot of news. After years, the list of the 50 largest travel companies has a new top three. In addition, many newcomers, not only in the Top 50, but also in the sub-lists of largest tour operators and retailers. Want to reorder the Top 50 in print? Click here!
It shows how dynamic the travel world is. Nothing is set in stone. Sometimes companies disappear, such as the bankrupt Vacancesoleil, which appears in the list one more time, but more often new companies pop up. It gives confidence for the future. And that’s what we look at in this edition in particular; the future of the travel industry, with a brief look at the past year. Not for nothing, then, is our theme “Back to the Future. Wondering how the travel industry will shape up over the next few years? This and more can be read in the new edition of TravMagazine’s special Top 50 issue, which reaches subscribers this week and can also be read digitally. In the traditional Top 50 interview, we discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the travel industry over the next five years. We look ahead with Hilda van der Wel-Gonzalez (Avila Reizen), Frank Oostdam (ANVR), Joyce Fonteijn (Kupers Reisinfo), Nico Bleichrodt (Holland America Line), Hans Knottnerus (Sunny Cars), Don Kaspers (The Travel Club), Charles Verstegen (Transavia), Arjan Kastelein (Personal Touch Travel), Helen van Berkel (ATPI), Maaike van der Windt (de Jong Intra Vakanties). Discussion leader is publisher Tom van Apeldoorn (TRAVel Media). In the same issue, we speak with Arjan Kers (TUI) about his moment when he walked into TUI’s Rijswijk headquarters nine years ago and how the travel industry has changed in recent years. But also how he developed himself. Martin van Kranenburg once stood at the cradle of the D-reizen website, but is now one of the most in-demand conversion, personalization, – and neuromarketing specialists in the Netherlands. The author of the book “Writing for the Brain,” he knows better than anyone how to influence the unconscious brain on websites, in newsletters and on social media. He tells us what impact AI is going to have on the travel industry. Young talent is also featured. Thijs van Toorenenburg (Travel Talent 2023) gives us an insight into how his generation looks at the future of the travel industry and which topics will play a bigger role in the future. Read all the interviews, the figures, the expectations and more in the special Top 50 issue that reaches TravMagazine subscribers this week and can also be read digitally. https://issuu.com/trav_media/docs/top_50_2023?fr=xKAE9_zU1NQ

Three speakers who seemingly had nothing to do with each other, but still managed to captivate the audience. During the TravConnect event organised in collaboration with Travelport and Sanoma on 12 November. At Schiphol, Mark Ogertschrug of IKEA, Anthony Drury of easyJet and Ben Droste of XCOR showed how they serve their customers without losing sight of the company’s core values. Young professionals and established names from the Dutch travel industry gathered in the luxurious and atmospheric Summum lounge of the General Aviation Terminal at Schiphol-East. Anthony Drury, easyJet’s Head of Business, looked back on the two decades that the orange airline has existed. “Twenty years ago, we offered our first flight from Luton to Glasgow for £29.99, the price of a pair of jeans. Now that flight costs the same. You pay three times as much for a pair of jeans.’ Mark Ogertschrug tried to dispel a number of prejudices about IKEA. No Allen key, missing screws and the ball pit – IKEA offers affordable design at a reasonable price, which is also sustainably produced. And the customer can buy it however he wants. “We are always strong in bricks, but more and more customers want to order IKEA furniture via clicks. The Netherlands is one of the first countries where we introduced omnichannel retailing.’ Ben Droste was one of the founders of SXC Curaçao, the space company that is now called XCOR. His goal: to enable suborbital tourism. ‘Within five years, we will be making commercial space flights. The next step: flying to Australia in two hours.’ Sanoma and Travelport look back on a successful event. ‘It’s a forum like you wouldn’t find anywhere else with a nice dynamic between speakers and attendees,’ says Diederik van Dam of Travelport.
