Last week, Daniëlle de Best was appointed as the new manager of Legal and Consumer Affairs.
‘With Daniëlle, we have succeeded in bringing a very experienced lawyer into the ANVR team,’ says Frank Radstake (director of ANVR).
Radstake: ‘Needless to say, we are very happy with that. With the revision of the Package Travel Directive, the Passenger Regulations, the necessary amendments to the Advertising Code for Travel Offers and the revision of the system of low-threshold dispute resolution, there is more than enough to work on. It was nice to see how Daniëlle immediately got to know the (international) dynamics of the travel sector with our reaction to the unfortunate plan to have to take out compulsory local insurance for a visit to Zanzibar.’
De Best: ‘After my studies at Leiden University, I gained experience both as an independent entrepreneur and as legal counsel at various companies.
As of August 19, I started as Manager Legal and Consumer Affairs at the ANVR.
As part of the ANVR team, I will give substance to and implement lobbying activities and advocacy, support the explanation and implementation of relevant laws and regulations and translate them into readable texts.
In my spare time I read a lot, I like to walk in nature and I am very fanatical about (board) games.
I look forward to getting to know all the members of the ANVR and all other people and parties who are active in this great sector.
Would you like to meet us or do you have a question?
Feel free to contact me at danielle@anvr.nl.’

Schiphol has announced that the systems are currently being restarted. “Together with airlines, we are working hard to get all travelers to their destination as quickly as possible.” Travelers are advised to contact their airline and keep an eye on their up-to-date flight information. KLM has also announced that the disruption that affected airlines and airports worldwide today has been as good as solved at the airline. KLM: “Traffic to and from Schiphol can be fully resumed. However, many flights have been delayed and cancelled out of necessity. These disruptions in the timetable are expected to continue tonight (CET) and this weekend when our flight schedule starts up again. As a result, we may have to cancel more flights to get the operation in order.” The airline advises passengers to keep an eye on the flight information on the website KLM.com or in the KLM app. “We are doing everything we can to transport our passengers to their travel destination.”

Today, the Supreme Court ruled that the decision of the Amsterdam Court of Appeal, which allowed the Dutch State to take two measures to reduce noise pollution from Schiphol, will not be upheld. According to European rules, these measures must follow a procedure of a balanced approach.

The government had decided to tighten the noise standards in order to better protect people living in the vicinity of Schiphol against noise pollution. To this end, two measures were announced. The first measure is the introduction of a temporary experimental scheme, which sets a maximum of 460,000 aircraft movements as a standard. The second measure means that the tolerance of violations would stop. In the meantime, a new legal regulation would be worked on.

Last year, judges ruled several times whether the government had acted correctly in reducing the maximum number of flights at Schiphol. In 2022, the previous government decided to introduce this measure to limit noise nuisance for local residents. Schiphol accepted this decision, but airlines and the aviation umbrella organisation IATA did not. They went to court. According to the aviation sector, the then Minister of Infrastructure Mark Harbers should not have taken this decision without applying the ‘balanced approach’.

Initially, the court ruled that the State should have followed the European rules. On appeal, the Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the government, because it was a temporary restriction on the number of flights. Now, however, the Supreme Court has ruled, after cassation by the aviation parties, that the State should have gone through those procedures better. This is also necessary for a temporary decision.

The programme for the ANVR congress to Oman has been announced. This year, participants can supplement the program with pre- and post-tours provided by Middle Eastern Tours. “The congress itself will mainly take place in the capital Muscat, to avoid long bus journeys during the congress days,” according to the ANVR The deadline for the option on the pre and post tours expires on June 21. After that, availability will be reviewed and prices may change. The price for each tour is linked to a minimum number of participants of sixteen people. “We are extremely proud of the program that we can set up together with Oman. Not only will the conference participant be presented with a high-quality conference with a unique ‘line-up’ of speakers, but they will also be immersed in the luxury of the W Muscat hotel and get a good idea of this authentic city due to the various locations in the immediate vicinity. And to complete the picture, Oman can be further discovered before or after,” says Frank Oostdam (director of ANVR). From now on, you can register for the conference and the pre- and post-tours via https://www.anvrcongres2024.nl/

April does what he wants, and we notice it. At the time of writing this article, thunderstorms and hail are raging, even though it is the middle of April. It does not surprise us that various media also reported this week that international holiday bookings for the May holidays are going very well. But even after the May holidays, we see the bright rays of sunshine breaking through in the travel world and we see a wanderlust Netherlands moving towards the summer.
By: Nick Brandts and Marc van der Hulst (Google)

Search volumes in Q1 grow compared to last year, especially on transport

At the beginning of this year, Euromonitor predicted global growth of 16% in 2024 in their “Top trends for 2024” report. The ANVR also expects a strong 2024 in a press release. With Q1 behind us, we see that expectation at least fulfilled in the number of searches within the travel categories. We can draw a number of conclusions:

The total search volume of travel-related searches in Q1 of 2024 shows a similar pattern to pre-covid (2019). This return to the traditional seasonal pattern makes consumer behavior more predictable for travel providers.

Furthermore, we see an increase in search volumes compared to last year of about 8%. All categories within the travel category are growing, but especially categories related to transport (flying, car rental, bus & rail) are growing faster than average. Consumers seem to want to book their transport in advance to avoid higher future prices in the future.

The total number of clicks on travel-related ads is growing less rapidly than the number of searches. It seems that consumers are taking more time to research and compare the options before they proceed to book. Presumably this has to do with increased prices (due to increased fuel prices and inflation, among other things). For marketers, it’s important to identify the early signals that lead to bookings.

Interesting period with demand for both spring and summer

In the period between early booking and last minute, we traditionally see a mix of signals. During this period, we still see healthy interest in the summer holidays. In a survey at the beginning of the year, about 50% of Dutch people indicated that they would book their summer holidays before the end of February. The other half is therefore orienting and booking between February and the summer holidays. In March, the search volume for the search term ‘summer vacation’ was 10% higher than in 2023, indicating that the interest is there. In addition, we see a lot of interest in (short) holidays in the spring period, such as last Easter, the May holidays, Ascension Day and Pentecost. This interest is very last minute, as evidenced by clicks in the hotel category, where about half of all clicks occur within one month of departure. The peaks in volume for these types of short trips in the spring vary greatly from market to market. In the Netherlands, after Easter, Ascension Day and Pentecost are especially popular.

Relevant advertising with the help of AI

In addition to the mix of interest for different travel periods, we know that about 15%(!) of all searches are new and unique. This makes it even more difficult for marketers to reach the right traveler. A few tips on how to increase your success during this period: 1. Stay up to date with developments in search behaviour

Make sure you are aware of the latest trends in search behavior. You can find a lot of information in Google’s (free) Destinations Insights tool. Such as new popular destinations or growth in search volumes at traditional summer holiday destinations. For example, London was the most searched city for flights from the Netherlands in March, followed by Barcelona and Lisbon. Furthermore, the United Kingdom is the largest in searches for accommodations in the Netherlands, followed by Germany and the US. Useful for planning your inbound campaigns.
2. Optimize your campaigns using the latest technology

In the dynamic travel industry, it’s essential to stay on top of the latest developments. With constantly changing search behavior (of which 15% of the searches are new, i.e. unknown), you can use some help. With the help of AI and machine learning, the platforms within Google are being further developed to help with this. Like Performance Max and Broad Match.

Performance Max automates bids and creatives based on personalized insights, allowing you to manage your campaigns more efficiently and drive better results. The tool helps you find new audiences on new channels (such as Youtube, Discovery and Gmail ads) with potential customers. It’s proven to be successful alongside your regular Google Ads campaign, and the tool helps you optimize your budget across platforms. In addition, the tool helps you target specific audiences, such as potential travelers who are looking for flights to a certain destination or who are interested in a certain type of hotel.

With the help of Broad Match , you can expand your reach by matching relevant queries with your keywords, even if there are small differences in the wording. This ensures that you reach more potential customers who are looking for what you have to offer on search terms that you wouldn’t otherwise use in your campaign.
3. Ad creatives are super important

With both the summer holidays and the various spring holidays just around the corner, there are many opportunities on the street for those who know how to influence the purchase decision. Segment by audiences and adjust your messaging and assets accordingly. Use these in multiple formats in different funnels, for example via YouTube to achieve both the short-term (sales) and the longer-term (awareness) marketing objectives. Also think of the new tool Demand Gen , which has the strength of reaching new prospects. These are the target groups that are still in the exploration phase of their holiday.

We hope that this will provide good tools to make this challenging, but promising season a success.

The Reiswerk Travel Challenge is coming up again. From 28 May to 1 June, 64 students and experts from renowned travel companies will travel to the beautiful town of Monchique, in Portugal.
The 32 tourism students and the 32 students from other programmes, such as Marketing, IT, Data, Sales, Business Administration and the like, work together in small teams on a case. This case is all about sustainability and has been established in collaboration with the tourist board. The premium partners of this trip include Corendon, NTG, D-reizen and TUI. TravMagazine talks to these travel organizations about what role they will play, what the expectations are and where the focus is this year.
‘We expect an active programme’
Corendon expects a lot from this edition. ‘One of our current employees was a participant/student of Travel Challenge last year, based on his stories, expectations are high. That’s why we decided to join us as a premium partner this year. We expect an active programme full of inspiring companies, activities and students’, says Kimberly Punselie (HR advisor at Corendon). ‘We think it’s important to invest in young talent and are happy to be present at events, such as Travel Challenge. As a premium partner, we hope to give the students a good idea of how fun and dynamic the travel industry is. And, of course, how much fun it is to work at Corendon.’
Current topics
The tour operator is We are happy that the theme of sustainability is central to Travel Challenge. “As an airline and one of the largest tour operators, we bear a great responsibility for a more sustainable form of holidaying. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as 100% sustainable air holidays, but we do what we can. Sustainability is a broad concept, but hopefully the four P’s: people, planet, profit and pleasure will give the students tools. In addition, the case is about a current topic, not only in Monchique but worldwide, also in several destinations where we offer our holidays. We think it is important that we not only come to the destinations to pick up something, but also bring something. For example, we donate one Antillean guilder per passenger from Corendon to Curaçao to Hòfi Mango, a former plantation and now protected nature reserve on the island. Hopefully, the students’ plans will actually contribute to the sustainability of the environment, the local population and it will also give us ideas.’
Enthuse
‘During Travel Challenge, we join forces to enthuse students about what the travel industry has to offer in an interactive way. In addition, this is the perfect opportunity to showcase Corendon as a company. We are always looking for new talents and ideas, even if you don’t have a tourism education, you can come to Corendon. For example, in support departments such as IT, Marketing and Customer Service.’
‘These are the colleagues of the future’
Enthusing students is also something Net Travel Group (NTG) wants to achieve. ‘This year, we are going to enthuse students and schools about the travel world during the Travel Challenge days, where connection and collaboration are central. Nothing is more important in our industry. And also sharing knowledge, both from us to the student, but certainly also the other way around, because they are the colleagues of the future. In this way, we can keep change and innovation high on the agenda while learning from each other,” Annemieke Seegers (Sales & Account Manager at NTG) tells TravMagazine. ‘These days we are closer together. With a super fun program, you will learn to get to know everything that is covered in our industry. They are not all easy assignments, but definitely assignments that require creativity, enthusiasm and perseverance. During these days, students get to know the industry and also the different organizations and we get to know our future (potential) employees. From previous year, we know better than anyone how important these days are.’
Stimulate
‘Sustainability has been a hot item on everyone’s agenda for years. As far as our industry is concerned, not only in the field of aviation, but it also affects, for example, traveling by car, the way of taking a holiday and the interpretation thereof. Sustainability is an on-going process. Not always a fun subject, because we tend to think in terms of limitations rather than (affordable) alternatives, and therefore a very interesting topic, especially with the participating students. During these days, we try to encourage students to think about what changes we can apply to come up with sustainable solutions. During the last Travel Challenge in Fuerteventura, this was also an item and it soon became clear that there are enough solutions to creatively fill in these two components. Assignments during Travel Challenge are therefore leading here and a very important part.’
Thinking differently and acting differently
Of course, these days offer countless opportunities to not only get acquainted, but also to share knowledge and to enthuse students about all areas of interest within our organization, in the field of product, ICT, sales and marketing, finance, support, aviation, et cetera. And because the travel group is so diverse, students come from different schools and fields, we can really take the students through all the possibilities within the NTG organization. This edition of Travel Challenge we are not only in the foreground as one of the premium partners, but we will also be coaching the groups during the various assignments. ‘Thinking differently and acting differently’ is our theme for this year and we would like to share that with all students these days on how NTG approaches this. Not very unknown to us, because we never do anything else. Innovation is and will remain an important part of our existence in the travel industry. How wonderful is that to take that knowledge and energy with you and to be able to share it with the participants. We are very much looking forward to it again.’
‘An excellent opportunity’
For D-reizen, Travel Challenge offers an excellent opportunity to get to know up-and-coming talent. “We expect creativity and innovation from different angles to come together to find solutions to the challenges facing the travel industry, in this case specifically in Monchique. We look forward to showing our entrepreneurial character and attracting new talents who Dare and Do, with a capital D for D-reizen’, says Rebecca den Ridder (Corporate Recruiter at D-reizen).
No guts, no glory
‘During Travel Challenge, our focus is on stimulating courage, creativity and agility. In addition, we want to encourage students to think out of the box and find solutions that are not only profitable or commercially interesting, but also have a positive impact on the environment and the surrounding area. Students can expect to be challenged by D-reizen in an open and stimulating environment in which they can grow and develop their entrepreneurial skills. Under the guise of ‘No Guts, No Glory’, we encourage our colleagues, but also these new talents, to step off the beaten track.’
‘Future proof’
“As a market leader, TUI embraces initiatives such as Travel Challenge. It’s the perfect opportunity to meet new talent and get to work with them,” says Anke van Nieuwenhuizen (External Communications Manager at TUI). ‘It is with great pleasure that we pass on our knowledge during these days. Experience shows that we also get a lot of knowledge in return. Knowledge that allows us to take the next step in making the sector future-proof. At TUI, cooperation with various study programmes, including MBO, HBO and WO, has been high on the agenda for many years. Investing in training and in young talents is investing in the future of TUI. During Travel Challenge, the talents are introduced to TUI and the opportunities we have to offer as an international learning company. For us, that is a real added value that we are happy to invest in.’
Ambitious goals
As mentioned, this year’s challenge focuses on sustainability. This topic is also an important spearhead within the TUI Group. ‘The ambitious goals were set in the Sustainability Agenda launched last year. Objectives that every source market has worked hard with, including us in the Netherlands. The fact that the challenge is all about sustainability fits in well with this and we wholeheartedly applaud it. There will undoubtedly be many good ideas from the business case that the students will work with. Ideas that we can actually put into practice and with which we can make the travel industry a little more sustainable. We have TUI colleagues who travel with us to Portugal; for coaching and guidance. But also to take the students into the world of innovations and specifically Artificial Intelligence, because TUI is already doing a lot with that.’

Captain Cruise will be present at the sixth edition of TravDay on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. ‘Of course, as the winner of the Cruise award 2024, we cannot be missed at the Travday! This is the opportunity for us to see travel agents and talk to them about our offer. With the largest selection in the Netherlands of 48 shipping companies, both sea cruises and river cruises, there is plenty to discuss,” said Robert Pieter Gardenier and Gitte Tilro of Captain Cruise.
‘We take our VR glasses with us to inspire everyone and give them the opportunity to take a 3D tour of a ship. We also let you taste the atmosphere of a river cruise ship through these 3D glasses. We also give away a nice study trip. See you on Tuesday, March 26th.’ Sign up for TravDay now: https://travday.nl/nl/aanmelden-bezoekers/
