The government is considering making a final decision next year about the opening of Lelystad Airport for holiday flights.
Despite earlier opposition in the House of Representatives, Minister Barry Madlener (Infrastructure) sees room to make the airport operational in 2025.
De Telefgraaf writes this on the basis of what insiders in The Hague let the newspaper know.
Lelystad Airport, originally intended to relieve Schiphol, is largely ready for use, with an extended runway and a new terminal.
At the end of August, the municipality of Lelystad sent the minister a letter about the opening of Lelystad Airport.
The province of Flevoland and the municipality of Lelystad have been pushing for the opening of the airport for years because of the expected economic benefits and employment.
At the same time, there are concerns about noise nuisance for local residents and permit procedures are still underway that need to be completed.
Within the coalition, there are divisions on the issue.
PVV and VVD support the opening, while NSC and BBB are undecided.
The upcoming government programme states that a final decision on the future of the airport will be made in 2025.
If the plans go ahead, Lelystad could take over part of Schiphol’s air traffic, but the economic interests are still being weighed against the objections of local residents. Last Monday.
‘TravMagazine – The Podcast’ also talked about a possible opening of Lelystad Airport.

Poland’s eSky Group is acquiring one of the most recognizable names in the travel industry: Thomas Cook.
The acquisition agreement signed with Fosun Tourism Group will drive significant growth for Thomas Cook and enable eSky Group to strengthen its position in Western Europe.
eSky Group, owner of a leading travel platform in Central and Eastern Europe, today announced that it has entered into an agreement with Fosun Tourism Group for the acquisition of Thomas Cook, excluding its operations in China.
The financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed, and closing is subject to customary closing conditions.
This strategic acquisition gives Thomas Cook access to eSky’s extensive range of flights and offers opportunities for further growth.
At the same time, this opens the door for eSky to one of the most developed markets in Western Europe, which will significantly strengthen their market position.
This acquisition follows the launch of the new online Thomas Cook in September 2020, just ten months after Fosun Tourism Group acquired the iconic brand.
Fosun Tourism Group, a global tourism group with a strong focus on leisure, also owns brands such as Club Med, the international market leader with around 70 resorts.
Founded in 2004, eSky Group has become the dominant travel platform in Central and Eastern Europe and has expanded globally in recent years.
Currently, eSky operates under the eSky and eDestinos brands in more than 50 countries across Europe, America and Africa.
The company has helped more than 150 million customers reach the farthest destinations and provides access to more than 550 airlines and 1.3 million hotels worldwide.
In 2023, eSky Group achieved a profit of more than 19 million euros, an increase of 42% compared to the previous year, and almost three times as much as in 2019.
“The combination of Thomas Cook’s rich brand history and our technology will accelerate Thomas Cook’s growth and strengthen our position in Western Europe.
This acquisition is a strategic step to expand our offering from airfare only to full package holidays in our existing markets in Europe and Latin America, and to further increase our presence in Western Europe,” said Łukasz Habaj, co-founder and CEO of eSky Group.
The company is based in Katowice, Poland, and has more than 800 employees, including an in-house development team of more than 190 people, which enables them to innovate quickly and at scale.
Since 2022, the eSky Group has been partly owned by the listed private equity firm MCI, a leading Digital & ClimaTech fund in Central and Eastern Europe.
MCI has also previously invested in taxi company Gett and payments company iZettle.
“The acquisition of Thomas Cook by eSky is in line with the company’s strategy to grow and expand the dynamic parcel segment globally.
This move will strengthen eSky’s position and could boost sales of eSky packages to more than €233 million next year, maintaining a triple-digit growth rate,” said Michał Górecki, Senior Investment Partner at MCI Capital.
In recent years, eSky has invested the most in city breaks and package holidays. This product is a cornerstone of the company’s transformation from a predominantly flight platform to a platform for virtual tour operators.
As part of the deal, Thomas Cook will remain within the company under the leadership of CEO Alan French.
The company will continue to operate under the name Thomas Cook.
“Completing this transaction will inject significant funding into our business, which will enable us to rebuild the brand and accelerate growth.
By combining the power of our dynamic package holiday technology and our expertise with the flight offer, performance marketing and technical expertise of the eSky team, we are confident that we will create a powerful European travel company,” said Alan French, CEO of Thomas Cook Tourism.
‘I am very happy with this step.
It will give the Thomas Cook brand the strength to grow, including by giving us access to more airlines, destinations and hotels.
As soon as we know more about our plans, we will let you know,” Mark Verbunt (Country Manager of Thomas Cook Netherlands and Belgium) told TravMagazine when asked.

Transavia CEO Marcel de Nooijer reacts with mixed feelings to the government’s measures regarding noise pollution and reducing the number of night flights.
For example, the CEO expresses great concern about the impact of fewer night flights on Transavia’s revenue model.
He is clearly not happy about the reduction in the number of night flights in his writing on LinkedIn.
He writes: ‘A reduction in the night of no less than 5,000 flights per year. In addition, there are measures such as deploying as many quieter aircraft as possible at night.’
According to De Nooijer, even fewer night flights will make ticket prices more expensive and that Transavia customers will be able to divert to airports in Germany and Belgium, which would have an impact on Transavia’s revenue model.
‘As a result, we are concerned about the challenging investment agenda. We strongly believe that it is precisely through fleet renewal that Transavia will achieve the common goal of reducing noise pollution. This certainly applies to the noise reduction at night, which is amply achieved.’ ‘In order to remain accessible in the future and to offer affordable tickets, it is crucial that we can operate night flights in addition to day flights,’ says De Nooijer.
‘In this way, we maintain our revenue model and the range of destinations from the Netherlands and we contribute to the Dutch economy, to the highly desirable holidays and necessary family visits.’
De Nooijer emphasizes that Transavia wants to reduce the nuisance around Schiphol.
‘We take our responsibility in that. In the coming years, we will invest billions in quieter aircraft and other initiatives. As a result, the noise will continue to decrease in the coming years. The reduction in noise nuisance at night, in combination with other measures in the announced package, will already far exceed the government’s target of 15% at night and possibly reduce it by more than 30%.’

On Wednesday 4 September, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management presented the final package of measures to reduce noise around Schiphol and restore the legal protection of local residents.
With this package, noise pollution around Schiphol will be reduced by 17%.
“I am proud of this package and think that we have a good balance between the interests of the environment and those of aviation,” says Minister Barry Madlener (I&W).
The new package will be submitted to the European Commission for an opinion.
After that, the government can take a final decision on the package of measures and lay them down in regulations.
Stricter noise standards will be introduced at night, which means that airlines will have to deploy quieter aircraft during those hours.
In addition, KLM has promised to deploy quieter aircraft at night.
Schiphol will charge significantly higher fares to airlines that use noisy aircraft.
For example, the use of the quietest aircraft is encouraged at the airport.
KLM and Transavia are also committed to rapid fleet renewal by 2025.
These new aircraft make less noise, which results in noise gains for the surrounding area.
A rest period on 2 lanes was one of the proposed measures in the package, but it has been scrapped.
Both the sector and local residents reacted negatively to this proposal.
The maximum number of flights allowed at night will increase from 32,000 to 27,000.
Before the summer, the previous government assumed that a reduction to 460,000 to 470,000 was needed to achieve the noise target.
But based on, among other things, more detailed information provided by the sector in the summer, it seems that the effects of some measures are greater than expected.
The exact amount of the maximum number of flights is currently being calculated.
More clarity on this audit is expected in the autumn.
At the same time, the government wants to take the next step by officially notifying the European Commission of this package.
This is important because of the intended introduction of the measures by November 2025.
In the notification, the government maintains a bandwidth in the number of flight movements of 475,000 to 485,000.
Checking the calculations may still lead to a different outcome.
